Tulip
Hill wines are a labor of love. It starts with Budge Brown's vision and
focus on the quality of wines he wants to produce. He works closely with
Jeff Brown, his son, in the growing process of each varietal, carefully
watching over the vineyards, and utilizing state-of-the-art growing techniques
to ensure the best fruit possible. After the harvest and crush, Budge
and Dana Kirkpatrick begin the process where this extraordinary juice
begins the fragile and closely watched transformation into becoming award-winning
wine

The
Mt. Oso vineyard is the largest of the Tulip Hill vineyards with 270 acres
of Cabernet Sauvignon, 11 acres of Chardonnay, 17 acres of Merlot, and
90 acres of Syrah. Jeff plans on adding an additional 80 acres of Italian,
Rhone, Spanish, and Portuguese varieties.
Mt.
Oso - A Unique Growing Climate
The
Mt. Oso region has the same rainfall as the Mojave Desert. The greatness
of the mountain often tends to steer the storms around the vineyard. The
water table is 110 feet deep. Currently, the grapes have already done
through bloom and the 2002 crop is starting to form. This is a critical
time in growing wine grapes because too much water will cause the berries
to become too large, too little and the fruit will start to drop from
the vine. Currently, we are closely monitoring the cane length and water
potential. Water readings are taken three times per week and the moisture
is adjusted accordingly. Other conditions are monitored and checked daily.
Every year is different keeping Jeff on his toes and on the cutting edge.
Jeff flies his Cessna 175 Bush Plane from the Mt. Oso vineyard to Tulip
Hill's Pope Valley and up to the winery in Kelseyville. He definitely
gets around.

The
Pope Valley vineyard has 13 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5 acres of
Petite Syrah. Our Pope Valley Vineyards are located on the backside of
Howell Mountain. The vineyards are all hillside facing to the North East
to greet the morning sun and to be cooled by the shadow of the mountain
in the setting sun. The Pope Valley soil is consistent with the Howell
Mountain's typography, rocky, steep slopes, and surrounded by old oak
trees. The vineyards are all hand pruned and picked. Jeff Brown manages
this vineyard with a watchful eye. We are excited to share with you our
first release from this vineyard, our 2000
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, released December 2003.
